Playing with my new lens...

I love photography. That's like my new hobby now. I love trying to figure out what the best settings are for a specific situation. I'm pretty amateur at this and still a baby when it comes to handling my camera. Especially when I look at other people's photo blogs...wow, I really have a lot to learn and growing up to do.
So, I bought a mini SLR, a Canon Rebel XT with the 18-55mm kit lens last year and I've been experimenting ever since. The camera is ok. I think the lenses are more important than anything else. At least, to my amateur self... Being money-conscious and all, I couldn't go and buy the lenses that I'd really like to have, like the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 tele or the wide Canon 16-35mm f/2.8... So, in order to get some bigger aperture than what I have on my kit lens - f/3.5 - I decided to get the tiny and prime 50mm f/1.8 from Canon. It's compact, light and for the price ($75 from www.theimagingworld.com), is a good lens to play with. It's great for portraits and that's the main reason why I bought it. I realized, though, that you need to do some leg-work in order to get the picture, especially if you want to include a bigger scene. It required me to get back more in order to get everything I wanted to get in. But it's great if you are close to something and if you want to get little details... The big aperture allows you to get focused subjects and really cool blurry backgrounds. That's what it says it can do, I still have to get that perfect shot...but that's my fault, not my lens's or my camera's. I personally like the new lens and I think it's a good first addition to my gear. Until I learn more about this "beast", little un-expensive stuff like these make me happy!

NOTE: the food photos from a post below were done with the new lens. As you can probably see, they're a little yellow/orange-y (like the chicken we had), because of the light or because of my inept-ness of taking a picture. You decide...

NOTE 2: 8 MORE DAYS TIL TAKE-OFF! (more about that, in a later post: I'm letting the excitement build up!)...
